We are a group of outdoor enthusiasts passionate about sharing our love for nature and the Lowcountry with you. You'll hear us on the phone, meet us in our retail locations, join us to explore the waterways, and see us out and about in our community. We are the Outside team and we hope to inspire you to Get Outside on Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Palmetto Bluff, Daufuskie Island and Page Island.

Mike's the one with the vision and enthusiasm that keeps this team together and the company growing. Originally from Washington, DC, he has been on Hilton Head for over 30 years. The windsurfing school he started at South Beach in 1979 has grown to be the amazing company we now know as Outside.

Capt. Boo Harrell

Manager / Outside Palmetto Bluff

Boo has spent most of his life in and around Bluffton. He joined the Outside Team over 25 years ago as windsurfing instructor. Boo has served in absolutely every capacity—from kayak guide to engine repairman, to dock builder to USCG licensed Master Captain, to team and leadership facilitator (and more).

Deb grew up on the coast of South Carolina. Always having been a beachcomber and a nature lover, that love grew even stronger when she moved to the lowcountry of Hilton Head over 30 years ago. She says being with the Outside Team is a dream come true; it’s like having a second family. Her love of nature and dolphins is a passion she now loves to share with others. Don’t be surprised if you catch her talking to the dolphins. We hear she even has names for a few of them. Debra is the proud mother of two children, Skyler and Sierra Davis. She is a U.S.C.G. Master Captain, and is also a S.C. Master Naturalist

Vernell has been with Outside for many years as a guide and retail associate. She is from the Outerbanks of NC. The variety of people, experiences and athletic environment at Outside are the highlights of her job.

Capt. Patte Ranney

Director of Education

Captain Patte is Director of Education and has been on the Outside team since Janu ary 2002. Originally from Rocky River, OH, she has lived on Hilton Head Island for well over 30 years. Patte is a USCG licensed Master Captain, NAI certified Interpretive Guide, and SC Master Naturalist. Patte leads kayak and boat trips and facilitates team and leadership programs. In addition, she leads guide training, oversees in-house continuing education and contributes to program development. In her free time, Patte is a devotee of meditation and yoga. She and husband Steve have 5 grown children and half a dozen grands.

Originally from McHenry, IL, Mark has been on the Outside team for longer than just about anyone. He says that the best part about his job is "undoubtedly, the incredible staff that I work with, they're family." In his free time, Mark loves spending time with his two girls and teaching them to surf.

Capt. Brad Johnson

Captain Brad learned to love the outdoors growing up in Watuaga, TN. He says "Watua ga" is Cherokee for "big water." Brad is a interpretive guide and USCG licensed Master Captain. He says the best part of his job is "helping others discover and enjoy the awe-inspiring spendor of the Lowcountry." One of Brad's favorite pastimes is reading about the people and culture of this special place.

Leisa grew up in the northeast and has been living in the low country for the past 36 years. After retiring for a few years from owning two women's fashion and accessories stores, she joined our team as our buyer. She travels far and wide to find the best looking lifestyle clothes, shoes and accessories for our stores. She is married to one of our kayak guides (Peter) and has three children that also love being OUTSIDE!

Capt. Mike Pace

Mike Pace, originally from Texas, made his way to the Low Country in the early 80's via Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and Connecticut. When asked about not having a Texas accent, he admits laughingly, that he still says 'ya'll'. Why a Boat captain with Outside Hilton Head? "Everyday is different... the people, the discovery, the wildlife, the weather, the water. It's just a great office!"

Kelley was born in Newport Beach, CA, grew up in Sewickley, PA, and made it to Hilton Head many years ago. She is an integral member of the Outside retail staff. When asked what the best part of her job is, she replied "...meeting new people each and every day from all parts of the country (and sometimes the world). I like providing service that exceeds expectations with the goal of having Outside the place they come back to again and again

Michael Hodsdon

Michael does alot of "fun stuff" for Outisde. Since 2009, Michael has been our #1 Paddleboard Instructor. He also leads kayak trips, works at the Shelter Cove Marina Outside kiosk, does retail, delivers kayaks, maintains boats, and handles children's camps. Michael has recently received his USCG captain's license. He loves his job "because I have the best office in the world, and I get to share my passion for the area with people that genuinely enjoy being on the water." Michael and his wife Morgan welcomed a daughter, Harper, in November 2010.

Director of Administration

Tracie Martucci is Outside’s Director of Administration.  Originally from Troy, MI, she’s been on the island since 1993 and joined the OHH team in 2005.mIn her free time, Tracie loves traveling with her husband and son.  She is also a huge Detroit sports fan.

Holly was raised a Kansas girl, but the island life called her name.  This is Holly's 3rd season with Outside Hilton Head and she has received all Paddle Fit certifications.  She certainly feels like she could be living on the water from SUP-up to SUP-down.

Carol Kavanaugh

Carol Kavanaugh moved to Hilton Head Island in 1986 from Buffalo, NY.   As owner of Click Event Production, her company has raised more than $1M for local charities.  She served as Co-Event Producer for the Hilton Head Island Celebrity Golf Tournament for many years and most recently was featured on Wedding Impossible, Food Network’s production of Chef Robert Irvine’s wedding in Napa, CA.  She has recently become part of the destinations by Outside Team and is excited to grow with the company.Carol feels much more at home on the water than on a golf course or in the kitchen – but mostly as a passenger on other’s boats.

Katy Doolan graduated from Western Illinois University with her bachelors degree in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration with an emphasis in Outdoor Education and Outdoor leadership. Katy was involved in an environmental and kayaking club while in college which lead her to search out an internship far from home with these interests.

Captain Jimmy reese has explored the waters around Hilton Head Island beginning in the mid 70's. After graduation from the University of Georgia (B.B.A. Real Estate, of course), Captain Jimmy built his professional career around the Lowcountry and its unique fishery and seafood. "I managed Hudson's Seafood Restaurant much of that part of my life."

Michael Smith

Michael Smith is a native of the Bluffton area, raised along the pristine banks of the May River, sailing, swimming and kayaking. He has worked on the water for fifteen years, the last six with Outside Hilton Head as an expert kayak guide. Specializing in the history and nature of the area, he communicates a unique perspective on the relationship between the two. Michael's found most days at our Outside Palmetto Bluff location introducing others to the beautiful marshes he calls home. Michael and his wife Christine were joined by a son, Samuel, in December 2012.

Marcus Taylor

Capt. Marcus Taylor is a Hilton Head native. His favorite area of the island is right in "Hilton Head's backyard, its beautiful salt marshes." He grew up fishing the local waterways, and is one of the charter fishing captains for Outside. He is most excited about "sharing his knowledge and passion of Hilton Head with others, and staying OUTSIDE!"

Pete Barbano is from Middletown NY. He's been working on the water for almost 30yrs, mostly as a charter or commercial fisherman. He says that even after all that time he's still in awe of every sunrise and sunset and the wonders of Gods creations. He's true passion is ministering to orphans in Malawi Africa in the spring and fall..

Kent Grimes has been a kayak guide and instructor with Outside Hilton Head since early 2010. Originally from near Philadelphia, with his jobs he and his wife, Pennie, have lived in seven states in different parts of the country. After vacationing on Hilton Head Island for 35 years and after retiring they moved here in 2008.

Capt. Grant Salzer

Captain Grant Salzer hails from sunny South Florida, growing up in the Miami Lakes area. He joined the Outside Hilton Head team in the summer of 2011. He has a passion for the outdoors and loves being on the water as a USCG Master Captain teaching and instructing kids and families about the Lowcountry environment. When not working, he spends time with his wife Elizabeth and his two sons Ethan and Eli.

Justin Wooten

Justin developed a love for the water and water sports at a young age growing up in New Bern, NC. He joined the team in the summer of 2010 as an intern and returned the following summer primarily teaching Standup Paddleboard classes, and is now a certified ACA Instructor. After completing his degree in Tourism Management at N.C. State University and becoming a USCG Master Captain, he returned as a full time employee. Justin is now the Reservations Manager, and loves to get on the water to enjoy the dynamics of the marsh.

Mickey Price

A USCG Captain for over 20 years, Mickey is passionate about helping guests learn about the marine environment and history of the area. A local resident for about 25 years, Mickey currently lives on the Island with his wife Stacey and daughter Ella. In his free time, Mickey can be found out on the water with his family, hunting or playing golf.

Captain Andrew Mahoney is a full-time fishing guide, raised fishing the waters around Hilton Head Island. He spends more than 300 days a year guiding guests to world class fishing in the Lowcountry. Over the years the Lowcountry marsh has become his home and his passion, and he has dedicated his life to finding the best times and locations to sight cast to hungry fish. A true guide in a world of charter captains, Captain Drew is committed to showing you Hilton Head the way Mother Nature intended it.
