Make Your November a “Giving Month” – Here Are Some Fun Ways

As November sets in, we all begin the season of spending time with family, eating and gift giving. For many, the month is characterized by shopping. With all of the cute little stores, outlet malls and chains, we have lots of great local places to shop.Last year in the days between Thanksgiving and “Cyber Monday” American’s spent over 3.7 billion dollars for consumer goods in store and online.

While we all enjoy giving and getting, it’s difficult not to consider those less fortunate. Create new traditions in your family by making your November a ‘Giving Month.’ For locals and visitors, Hilton Head offers several fantastic and fun ways to give back to our community this month.

“Giving Month” Community Events

Saturday November 7th – NAMI Lowcountry is hosting its 10th annual beach walk – Footprints in the Sand. It is the largest mental health awareness and fundraising event in Lowcountry.Registration begins at 9am, followed by a 5k walk on the beach at 10am. There will also be games, refreshments and a block party following the event, with local favorites Cranford Hollow headlining the music performances. Admission is $20 per person, all of which goes to supporting NAMIs free education and support programs in our community.

Saturday November 14th – The Heritage Library is a historical resource for those looking to discover the rich past of our area or trace their ancestors. They host several educational and genealogical programs throughout the year at no charge to participants.On November 14th from 11am to 3pm The Heritage Library will host their annual Book Fair at Christ Lutheran Church.The event will feature over 30 writers signing their works as well as famed local author Pat Conroy, whose books include ‘The Water is Wide’ and ‘South of Broad.’ Admission is $10, all of which goes to programming for The Heritage Library.

Saturday November 21st thru Season– Get into the spirit of the season with a trip to the Dove Street Festival of Lights at Shelter Cove Towne Centre. Each night, starting on Saturday November 21st, from 6-10pm the area is covered in magical holiday lights displays! Admission is free with a donation to local charities The Deep Well Project and Programs for Exceptional People.

Wednesday, November 25th – The Sandbox Children’s Museum is an award winning facility dedicated to experiential, educational fun for kids. Get warmed up for Thanksgiving on Wednesday, November 25th at The Sandbox’s 10th Birthday block party.Highlights include a corn maze, bounce house, giant building blocks, holiday crafts and much more. Admission is $8, all of which goes back to developing this crucial resource.

Friday November 27th – On the Friday following Thanksgiving, between delicious leftovers, head over to The Sea Pines Racquet Club for their annual Thanksgiving Pro Tennis Exhibition.This year’s event will feature former Number 1 ranked tennis player Stan Smith, made famous by his own model of Adidas shoe. Receive valuable tennis tips, enjoy complimentary refreshments and win prizes in the raffle! Admission is free with a donation of canned goods for The Deep Well Project.

With recent flooding in our state, many have been left in great need. Look out for donation drives around the island collecting clothing, pet supplies, paper products and other household items. Every little bit helps to rebuild!
