Fall is the Perfect Time to Explore Daufuskie Island
Tucked between Hilton Head Island and Savannah is Daufuskie Island, a true gem of the Lowcountry. Constantly inhabited for the last two thousand years, this island has never had a bridge connecting it to the mainland. The result of this isolation is a landscape and culture completely unique to this island. Every day the waters of the ocean, the sound and the river lap at the shores of Daufuskie Island. The water is intimately intertwined with the story of Daufuskie, its past and its present. You’ve traveled across the water to get to this island. You’ve left behind the sound of traffic and alarms and phones ringing. Now you are removed from the everyday, the ordinary, the measurement of time on a clock. Time here is measured by the fall and rise of the tide. Now, discover the hidden treasures of Daufuskie Island!
We offer several ways to see and explore Daufuskie. By far our most popular program is our Daufuskie History and Artisans Excursion. Departing from Hilton Head or Palmetto Bluff, this program begins with a scenic guided boat cruise to the Island. Your Captain is a Historian and Interpretive Naturalist. Once on Daufuskie, we load onto golf carts and explore Daufuskie, stopping at significant historical sites and artists’ studios. Stops on the golf cart tour may include: The First African Baptist Church, The Mary Fields School (memorialized in Pat Conroy’s, A Water is Wide), The Daufuskie Rum Distillery, The Daufuskie Museum, Silver Dew Pottery, The White School, the site of the Bloody Point Lighthouse and The Iron Fish Gallery (winner of Martha Stewart’s American Made Award). After the golf cart tour we will enjoy light snacks and refreshments before our return cruise.
Private programs are available for groups and families as Private Charters. If you would prefer to explore Daufuskie on your own, we offer a water taxi service charter. Our Captains will take you to your dock of choice on the island and depart from either location at a time convenient for you. The other self-guided option to Daufuskie is to rent one of our twenty foot pontoon boats and boat over to the island yourself. The ride is about an hour each way, so book at least a four hour rental in order to have time to explore the island.
