College Students Take An Alternative Spring Break on Hilton Head Island

children

On March 7th, 12 students from Emory University teamed up with The Outside Foundation for a little “spring cleaning” on the Page Islands. For over 5 hours these ambitious students removed over 200 pounds of trash from the surrounding marshes, cleared brush and landscape debris, and cleaned various wooded benches, railings, and floors.

Instead of heading off to a traditional Spring Break at the beach as so many college students do, these motivated folks chose an “Alternative Spring Break.” They contacted The Outside Foundation to see if they could volunteer for an environmentally-based project during their time off. Well of course the Foundation gladly accepted the generous offer and a plan was put into action.

In addition to their efforts here around Hilton Head Island, the group will finish out their Spring Break week by volunteering at various locations in the city of Charleston.

What a terrific group of young men and women this was from Emory University. The beautiful Page Islands are shining and pristine! Thank you Mike Overton and Mickey Price from Outside Hilton Head for making this project possible.
