226 Coat Collected for Deep Well
|RECYCLE YOUR JACKET COLLECTS 226 COATS
March 10, 2015 (Hilton Head, SC) – In an effort to provide winter coats and jackets to those that may not be able to afford them, Outside Hilton Head recently conducted it’s Recycle Your Jacket Program. The community was invited to donate jackets, coats and sweaters to Deep Well and in return receive a discount on the purchase of a new jacket from Outside Hilton Head. The promotion was well received and 226 pieces were donated.
“Donations are always very welcome, but this year they were needed more than ever before! They arrived at our facility the day before the brutally cold weather hit, and freezing Islanders have flocked here to pick up warm and beautiful outerwear. They have flown off the racks. Other years during our often warm February weather we have packed up some items and saved them for the first cold spell of the following season. I’m sure that this year every item will be gone by the time warm weather is here to stay.” said Betsy Doughtie, Director of The Deep Well Project.
2015 marks the twenty-third year that Outside Hilton Head has conducted the ‘Recycle Your Jacket’ program. In prior years, over seven thousand coats and jackets have been collected and donated.
A predominantly volunteer-based non-profit, with a minimum of paid staff, Deep Well has been helping islanders since 1973. The organization was founded by Charlotte Heinrichs as a service to locals who suffered illness as a result of drinking contaminated water from shallow wells. Needs evolved and so did Deep Well (as it’s known on the Island). We help people in emergency situations by giving them an immediate hand up, so they can continue to help themselves. It could be a rent payment between jobs, or food for the family when the cupboard runs bare and cash has all but run out.
Outside Hilton Head is a Low Country based outfitter established in 1979. The company operates specialty retail stores, nature based adventures, destination management and team and leadership development. The organization’s core values include protection and preservation of local nature, history and culture.
