Kayak to Hilton Head’s Vanishing Island!
The Living Sandbar Experience is a unique kayak tour, only offered by Outside. On this two and a half hour trip, you will paddle off of a Hilton Head beach – your destination is Joiner Banks, a remote sandbar only exposed at low tide. Once our kayaks are comfortably parked on the sandbar, we will explore the sandbar looking for unique wildlife on and in the water around the sandbar. Some species that are commonly seen include the lettered olive, brown pelican, Atlantic whelk, blue crab, sea turtles, sea pork, sea lettuce, sea whips, sponges, hermit crabs, small sharks, sand dollars, starfish, jellies, fish and Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Look around! The views from Joiner Banks are the best you will find, with great perspective of Hilton Head, Beaufort, Savannah and the Port Royal Sound.
This trip is a great way to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Hilton Head beaches. The Living Sandbar Experience is led by an experienced naturalist kayak guide who will tell you about the points of interest that you see out on the water and on the sandbar. We use sit-on-top kayaks for this trip, which are self bailing, so you can paddle around in the surf and maybe even catch a wave!
This trip is scheduled around optimal times to visit the sandbar and is offered all year. Due to the nature of the ocean, this trip is slightly more physically strenuous than our creek and marsh paddles. Children under the age of 12 are required to go in a double kayak with an adult.
