Choosing a Kayak

Contemporary kayaks come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. The options may seem limitless. Before looking at a particular model, talk to an Outside Hilton Head salesperson who can help you decide which category of kayak suits you the best.
Kayaks are generally divided into the following categories:
---Touring
---Light Touring
---Sport or Recreational
---Sit-on-Top
---Whitewater
You'll also need to decide whether you want a single or double kayak. And, whether you prefer a boat made of composite materials or plastic. There are advantages to every category and every model.

Don't forget about the following items to make your kayaking experience more enjoyable:
PADDLES - In general, the lighter and stiffer the paddle, the more you'll enjoy paddling and the more often you'll go out. Materials determine the weight and stiffness with carbon, fiberglass and aluminum being the most common.
PFD's - A USCG approved Personal Flotation Device must be on each kayak and should be worn by each kayaker. Your PFD should be comfortable and adjustable, allowing you to wear it with a wide range of clothing for different environments. Many are now made with mesh backs making it cooler for the wearer.
SAFETY - Each kayaker is required to have a USCG approved noise making device. You should also have a paddle float, bilge pump and a paddle leash.
ACCESSORIES - Depending on what type of paddling you intend to do, you may want to get some of the following items:
---Cockpit cover
---Spray skirt
---Dry bag/box
---Fishing rod holder
---Paddle holder
