Fishing Report
Fishing in the lowcountry varies depending on the season.
Winter species include:
Bottom fishing for Sheepshead along with big Black Sea Bass will peak between now and the end of March. Sheepshead can be caught inshore around docks - anywhere from 5 to 25 fish weighing up to 6 pounds in an hour - great for young kids who want to catch a lot of fish. For more adventurous anglers who would rather seek larger fish, the near-shore wrecks will be loaded with 6 to 14 pound Sheepshead and a plethora of Black Sea Bass and the action will be just as intense (or more so) than inshore. There's also a great opportunity for big catches further out where it gets pretty wild during the spring. Sheepshead and Black Sea Bass are always out there. On occasion, there will be Snapper or Grouper. Schools of Tuna come through on occasion when the offshore currents are right. Also, the Kings and Cobia will start trickling into our local waters. If someone wants to fish a 6 hour Offshore trip, it would be much more enjoyable on a nice day during the spring, and more successful than in the heat of the summer. With all this great stuff going on offshore, if someone just wants to get out and wet a line inshore sheepshead fishing will be full of tight lines. They are all I fish for between Reds and Trout in the fall and Cobia starting around the beginning of May. It's good fishing!
Spring species include:
COBIA begin to arrive in the spring and in large schools in the Port Royal Sound and Broad River. Fish average between 25 and 40 lbs. and it is not uncommon to catch a Cobia over 50 lbs. Fishing with bait is the most common method for catching Cobia but artificals and flys may be used when sightfishing on calm days.
Other species that are caught in the Spring are Tripple Tail, Spanish Mackeral, Blue Fish and several varieties of Sharks.
Summer species include:
TARPON arrive in the summer months in the Port Royal Sound as well as the back country creeks that surround Hilton Head. Tarpon are one of the most exciting inshore gamefish to catch because of there explosive long runs and incredible leaping ability. Tarpon average 75-115lbs. and may reach 150lbs. or more!
Other species in the Summer months include King Mackeral, Jack Crevalle, Spanish Mackeral, and Sharks. Sightfishing for Tailing Redfish is at it's Best!
Fall species include:
SPECKLED TROUT are in abundance in the fall and are a fun fish to catch on light tackle and also an excellent fish to eat. It is not uncommon to catch your limit of Trout in the fall, they average 1.5-2.5lbs.
REDFISH & FLOUNDER are also plentiful in the fall due to the abundace of baitfish and shrimp that are in the inshore creeks.
Sightfishing for Tailing Redfish is still very good. As the water temps cool large (Bull) Redfish begin to school right off the beaches of Hilton Head and average 20-35lbs.
Winter species include:
REDFISH (Spot Tail Bass): The most popular and sought after fish of our area. Reds can be caught all year long with the winter months being the peak time for casting flys or artificals to large schools of feeding fish in two feet of water or less. These winter fish range in size from two to fifteen pounds with the average being seven to eight pounds. In the summer months we stalk the tailing fish on the shallow grass flats around the high tides.
News from Capt. Jimmy: Fishing trips for Winter are more tide oriented than any other time of the year. Good fishing opportunities are available under selective conditions. It's best to customize fishing times whenever possible.
Aboard the O Cat: Best opportunity is bottom fishing at one of the near shore reefs for Sheepshead, Black Sea Bass, Gray Trout, Sharpnose Shark and Spiny Dogfish.
Aboard the Cleopatra: Inshore fishing is best on a flats trip with one or two anglers. Redfish are found on the shallow low water mud flats until mid March and provide the best opportunities.
